Chickens are a crazy lot,
They’ll help you dig your garden plot.
Each of them is quite unique
From their tails up to their beaks.
They flap their wings but can’t rise high,
Fly close to the ground, not in the sky.
The dominant bird will rule the roost
And pecking order, let them choose.
Roosters crow at the break of day,
Or sometimes earlier, come what may.
While chickens forage in the ground
For seeds and bugs that can be found.
Hens lay eggs when days are long,
So feed them well and keep them strong.
In turn, they’ll pay you for their keep -
As pets, chicken are cheap, “cheep, cheep.”
